IF YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY A DANGEROUS GAME

Astrid

I’ve never been one for broomstick riding, especially with my stomach growing larger each day.

So instead, I wait to be summoned.

Astrid Hall.

Astrid Hall.

Astrid Hall.

It’s easy for her to summon me. After all, she’s the second-most powerful High Priestess on the continent.

She’s at the cemetery. It isn’t technically on the grounds of Elmwood castle. It’s adjacent to a small village church, but because of the distance from the church to the neighbouring village of Houndsville, it’s rarely used anymore. Over the decades, fewer and fewer townspeople have bothered coming out this way.

It’s a misty night and the temperature is cooler further away from the castle, typical of this climate. There are fewer evergreens out here, and more scraggly, bare old trees. Their branches reach out like desperate limbs, shivering in the late winter chill.

A shadowy figure leans against a large gravestone depicting a winged, weeping angel. She has short, dark hair and large eyes that shine through the mist.

“That was quick,” she says.

“I’ve been meaning to speak with you, Amrita.”

“And I you, Astrid.”

We survey each other, playing the game of who will speak first. Naturally, I win.

“I suppose congratulations are in order,” the vampire-witch nods her head toward my belly. “When are you expecting your bouncing bundle of joy?”

I know what she’s angling for. “I conceived on Samhain.”

“Ah, so that’s why you’ve been lying low,” she crosses her arms. “We were all wondering what was going on. Very mysterious.”

I raise my eyebrow. “I’m not the High Priestess of the Lucifer coven for nothing.”

“That’s certainly true.”

Her barn owl familiar joins Munin on the branch of a nearby tree. They twitter to each other amicably.

“I promised I would ask you something,” says Amrita.

I tilt my head.

“Do you have Lydia Craft?” she asks mildly. “A witch from the coven of Hecate. One of the professors at Twin Torches. Expert in moon magic and healing spells.”

“And makes excellent spaghetti.”

She grins. “Good. You haven’t killed her yet. I thought you wouldn’t.”

“Why’s that?”

“You’ve always been a sucker for redheads, Astrid.”

“Oh very funny.” I glare at her, but can’t keep the smile from my face. It’s nice to speak with another evil witch, even if she is from the coven of Morgan. “Lucifer’s hair isn’t red all the time, he appears in different forms…”

She laughs, her bright white fangs flashing. “Let’s just hope the horns aren’t hereditary. That would be an interesting labour.”

I shake my head at her. “You would know a thing or two about intimate relations with Demons.”

“I can’t deny that,” she shrugs, tugging at the bright amethyst she wears around her neck. Then she looks at me earnestly. “But in all seriousness, Astrid, do be careful.”

“I can take care of myself.”

She runs a hand through her short hair. “I know it can be…exhilarating…the power of it, but…”

“I know what I’m doing. I’ve served Lucifer for hundreds of years. Much longer than you’ve served Morgan.”

“I know you do, Astrid, and I know you’re smart, but…”

“But what?”

She pauses. There’s a look of genuine concern on her face that makes my stomach knot.
